Bath is well known for its Roman Baths, a well-preserved ancient spa that is one of the most impressive Roman remains in Northern Europe. You can walk around the ruins and learn about the ancient Roman culture and their bathing rituals. You can also take the opportunity to bathe in the waters at the Thermae Spa, next to the Roman Baths.
Bath is also known for its Georgian architecture. The Royal Crescent, the Circus, and Pulteney Bridge are just a few examples of the city’s Georgian architecture.
Bath’s CUltural History
Bath was a fashionable city back in the 1700s and 1800s, and became a popular place to visit. During the Regency era (1811 to 1820), the city was known for it’s balls and dances. They were a place to socalise, and for unmarried ladies and gentlemen to find a husband/wife. If you’re a fan of Bridgerton, you’ll see these balls and dances referenced throughout the TV series.
Bath is famous due to its ties to Jane Austen, as the author made Bath her home between 1801 and 1806. Today you can explore her life and work by visiting the Jane Austen Centre. During your visit you can learn about Jane Austen’s life in Bath and how the city influenced her writing. You can also dress up in Regency-era clothing and take a photo with a life-size statue of Austen herself.
You can also take a walk around the city and see the places that inspired Austen’s novels, such as the Assembly Rooms and the Pump Room.
The city is also home to a thriving music scene, with many venues hosting live music events throughout the year. The Theatre Royal is a great place to catch a play or a musical, and it has a rich history dating back to the 18th century.

There’s an amazing collection of oil paintings on display which are well worth visiting as they’ll give you an insight into British culture over the years.
I also recommend visiting the Fashion Museum, which has an amazing collection of historic and contemporary fashion, including dresses, accessories, and textiles. You can also learn about the history of fashion and how it has evolved over time. Sadly the museum is closed while it moves from the Assembly Rooms, to its new home at The Old Post office. If you’re interested in the cities historical architecture, head over to the Museum of Bath Architecture. This museum focuses on the Georgian era, with exhibits showing you how Georgian Bath was built including how they built their houses. The museum is closed for 2023.
The American Museum is another great option for those interested in art and history. The museum showcases American decorative arts, including furniture, textiles, and folk art.
Near to Bath, you’ll also find the Aerospace Museum which is home to Concorde – the worlds fastest pessenger plane.
Shopping in Bath

Bath is a foodie’s paradise, with a wide range of cafes, restaurants, pubs, and tea rooms for you to pick from. Having afternoon tea while in Bath is one of those experiences you shouldn’t miss out.

Bath in Popular Culture
Bath has been the backdrop for several popular novels, TV series and movies, making it a must-visit destination for literature and movie buffs alike.

In “Persuasion,” Bath is the setting for much of the story, and the novel’s protagonist, Anne Elliot, spends a considerable amount of time in the city. Netflix’s 2021 adaption of Anne Elliot was mostly filmed in Bath. Plus in “Northanger Abbey,” Austen’s characters visit Bath to take in the city’s social scene, and the novel provides a detailed description of the city’s famous Pump Room.
The city is also featured in Bridgerton, with many of it’s sights including the Royal Crescent, Bath Street and The Holburne Museum featuring in the TV series. Filming for season 3 is also taking place in Bath. You can visit many of the Bridgerton filming locations by yourself or as part of a tour and imagine how it’d be to live in Bath durin the Regency era.
Bath’s stunning architecture and charming streets have also caught the attention of filmmakers. Several movies have been filmed in Bath, including the 2012 adaptation of “Les Misérables,” which used the city’s famous Royal Crescent as a backdrop.
The 2008 movie “The Duchess,” starring Keira Knightley, was also filmed in Bath! They used the city’s historic Assembly Rooms as a location in the movie.
Visiting Bath from Abroad
If you’re travelling to Bath from abroad, you’ll be happy to know that there are plenty of options for getting here. Chances are, you’ll be flying into one of London’s airports which gives you easy access to Bath.
One of the easiest ways to reach Bath from London is by train. There are regular trains from London Paddington Station that take just over an hour to reach Bath Spa station. From there, it’s just a short walk into the city centre.
If you’re coming from Europe, you could probably fly into Bristol Airport which is a short bus ride from Bristol Temple Meads. From there, you can get a bus to Bath, and this journey takes about an hour. Bristol Airport also has car hire, and is only a 35-40 minute drive from Bath.
If you’re planning a city break to Bath as part of a longer trip to the UK, you might also want to consider visiting other nearby attractions such as Stonehenge. This prehistoric monument is just a short drive or bus ride from Bath, and is a must-see for anyone interested in ancient history.
If you’re looking to combine your trip to Bath with other destinations in Europe, you might want to consider a ferry from nearby ports such as Dover or Portsmouth.
